Serviceable available market (SAM) is the part of the TAM you can reach with your geography, channels and capabilities today.
Serviceable obtainable market (SOM) is the share you can realistically win, given competitors, pricing and capacity. It is the number a growth plan should be built on.
About the data
The tool uses the U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistics of U.S. Businesses for 2017 and 2022, which carry receipts from the Economic Census. Receipts are gross sales in nominal dollars, firm counts cover employer businesses, and both years use 2017 NAICS codes so growth compares like with like.
Growth from 2017 to 2022 includes pandemic swings and recent inflation. Industry totals include every firm in the code, so a TAM is a ceiling, not a forecast. Results are directional estimates.
